Leadership, community involvement, technical excellence and a commitment to professional development are all key traits we look for in our engineers (and our other professionals, too). Those are also the traits the Western Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) looks for when it selects the recipient of its Young Engineer of the Year award. This year, that honor went to our own Kyle Roberts.
This honor recognizes young MSPE members who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession and their communities during the early years of their careers. The award committee evaluates nominees based on seven criteria:
- Collegiate educational and extracurricular achievements
- Professional society activities, positions held and achievements
- Technical society activities, positions held and achievements
- Community and humanitarian activities, positions held and achievements
- Continuing professional competency
- Career positions after completion of a bachelor’s degree
- Engineering career achievements
So what about Kyle stood out to the selection committee?
As a member of MSPE, Kyle has filled various volunteer chapter leadership positions, including secretary and chair of the Arrangements and Programs committees. He is also a member of the local chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Project Management Institute (PMI), as well as the local post of the Society of Military Engineers (SAME). In addition to being a licensed professional engineer in five states, Kyle’s a LEED Accredited Professional and a certified Project Management Professional.
Kyle began his career at Burns & McDonnell after graduating from the University of Nebraska in 2004. He has worked as a civil engineer, project manager and civil department production manager in our Aviation & Federal Group, serving clients all over the world. When he’s not working, you can probably find Kyle volunteering for Harvesters or Hope House, or chairing our internal United Way campaign.
Kyle accepted the 2014 Young Engineer of the Year award honor during the 63rd Annual Engineers Week luncheon in Kansas City in late February. He is a shining example of our future engineering leaders, and we know we’ll be in good hands with leaders like him at the helm.
Congratulations, Kyle!
